Friends of North Carolina High School Wrestling

The Friends of North Carolina High School Wrestling was formed in 2009 when the CEO of Team Rhino LLC stepped up to facilitate a need in the high school wrestling community.

Across the great state of North Carolina, the NCHSAA awards medals to 4th place in their state championship events. These awards are provided by a generous corporate donor. However, the NCHSAA State Wrestling Championships places to sixth place not fourth. The fifth and sixth place finishers are not awarded medals but are placed on the podium.

The FONCHSW worked with state coaching associations to try and rectify this in the most economical and logical manner. The option that we were left with is the one we currently implement and sustain. We accept donations for first through sixth place medals for all four high school classifications and their respective fourteen weight classes. We purchase those medals and issue them at the state tournament from the upper deck of the stands after the wrestlers come off the podium.

"Our son placed 6th a couple of years ago at States, and if it had not been for your efforts, he would not have received a medal to commemorate his achievement."

UPDATE: Friends of North Carolina High School Wrestling

A few weeks ago I was approached by someone who had raised $250 for the medal fund. He was unaware that this effort had stopped. We discussed options and I told him I would get back with him as we were well passed the deadline to order medals. We re-engaged this weekend and after going through the inventory we found that we have enough medals to give 5th and 6th place medals to one classification. Since the donation is coming from 3A the medals are going to the 5th and 6th place finishers in 3A.
Next step...we need someone to hand out the medals from the stands. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me directly. Thanks.

After serious deliberation I have decided that I will no longer be leading this effort. It is my hope that someone else or some other organization steps up to lead it. I will contribute to the cause and support it. I believe the cause is valid and worthwhile. My responsibilities for next year are increasing and I just do not believe I have the time it takes to keep beating the drum for support. Thanks to everyone who has contributed the last few years. I know that the wrestlers, particularly those who placed 5th and 6th appreciate it.

What a fantastic three days of wrestling!

Here is a quote from one of the NCHSAA place winners this year, "I really appreciate this, last year I was a 2A sixth place winner and would have gotten nothing if it weren't for you. It meant the world to me. This year I won the state championship 1A!"

We are still about $800 short. Please spread the word and keep the donations rolling in.

Donation Update - NCHSAA State Championships

It is definitely crunch time; for wrestlers, coaches, staffs, and the Friends of North Carolina High School Wrestling (FONCHSW)!

Today we received the bill for the 2012 NCHSAA State Wrestling Championship Medals. I want to emphasize that this year we ordered medals for ALL classifications even though all 1A state placers already receive medals. We need your help in spreading the word that this effort exists and why it exists. The total bill comes to $1580.04. There comes to $5.13 (tax and shipping included) per medal. Since last season's bill was paid, we have collected about $200.There are over 2500 wrestlers competing this weekend for the opportunity to have one of those medals on their neck next week. If we can get each wrestler to put a single dollar bill in a donation jar this weekend, we will take care of things for this year and be set up for next year.
The medals will be a little different this year than past years due to the timing of the order. We think they will still look great and still be appropriate for the accomplishment of placing at the state tournament.

"Our son placed 6th a couple of years ago at States, and if it had not been for your efforts, he would not have received a medal to commemorate his achievement."

That quote says it all and it means a lot to us. If you really want to see appreciation in a young person's eyes, come on up and help hand out the medals upstairs next weekend. It is a fantastic experience.
